Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God that did not come by force, but by His own death and which His disciples enter through suffering. Jesus proclaimed the message through preaching, healing, exorcising demons and feeding the crowds. Though the message of the Gospel meets the real physical needs of people, it also changes who a person is from the inside. It takes the whole person in body and soul. Yet He did not tie the message to Himself and His public personality. He gave it to groups of people to proclaim in people’s lives through preaching and healing. In Luke 9-14, a tension appears. The good news of the Kingdom comes to meet people in the midst of their need to address their plight, but to join the Kingdom and to spread it to others will cost disciples everything. The Kingdom of God is generous and so are its citizens.
